Previous ukiyo-e pictures employing perspective were ones in which the figures were small. In this picture by Harushige, Cool of the Evening (10.8 x 8.4), it is the figures, not the landscape, that are given a prominent place in the foreground, and the artist's point of vision is very low. This print has no parallel and the strange atmosphere which pervades the entire scene is unique in the whole domain of Ukiy-e art.
